Low Rainfall Raises Water Infrastructure Demand, Putting Five Stocks on Watchlists

India, home to approximately 18% of the global population but possessing only 4% of the world’s freshwater resources, faces growing pressure to strengthen water management amid concerns over low rainfall. Rapid urbanisation, industrial expansion and stricter environmental regulations are increasing demand for desalination, wastewater treatment, water recycling and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) solutions. These trends could create opportunities for water infrastructure companies. Among the stocks highlighted by Equitymaster on 10 October 2026 is VA Tech Wabag, a water technology company specialising in drinking water treatment, desalination, industrial water treatment and wastewater recycling. The company has executed over 1,500 water and wastewater treatment plants and reported a record order book of ₹194 billion, providing project visibility. Its operations span municipal and industrial segments, with growing opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing, solar photovoltaics, data centre cooling and green hydrogen. For the reported period, revenue from operations rose 20.8% year-on-year to approximately ₹8.9 billion, EBITDA increased 21.7% to ₹1.2 billion, and net profit grew 36.9% to ₹0.9 billion. The broader outlook highlights the potential role of water infrastructure investment in addressing India’s water security challenges, although stock performance will also depend on valuations, project execution, margins and financial risks.
