Following concerns raised by the Punjab and Haryana High Court over rapidly declining groundwater levels, Gurugram authorities have prepared an action plan to gradually phase out borewells and reduce groundwater extraction.
The plan encourages industries to shift to tertiary-treated wastewater for operational needs. Authorities will also identify and seal unauthorised borewells, expand rainwater harvesting, revive water bodies, and promote bioswales to improve groundwater recharge.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on a feasibility study for an underground rainwater-retention reservoir at Tau Devi Lal Stadium. GMDA has also introduced scientific rainwater-harvesting structures developed with IIT Delhi, while the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram is collaborating with IIT Gandhinagar on water-injection wells.
Additionally, rejuvenation work is underway on 142 ponds across the district, with several already restored. The initiatives aim to reduce groundwater dependence and build a more sustainable urban water-management system.
