Hyderabad Tanker Bookings Double as Groundwater Declines Amid El Niño Concerns

Daily water tanker bookings in Hyderabad have doubled from around 3,500 in October 2025 to nearly 7,000 in October 2026, prompting the Telangana government to urge households to reduce water consumption by at least 20%. Average groundwater levels have fallen from 3.55 metres to 10 metres below ground level, while only three of the district’s 16 mandals have received normal rainfall. With no inflows reported into the Manjeera and Singur reservoirs, existing supplies may last only until December. Authorities are exploring additional Godavari and Krishna water supplies, restricting new borewell permissions and expanding the use of treated wastewater for construction, landscaping and other non-potable purposes. The government is also promoting leak repairs, rainwater harvesting and water-efficient practices as below-normal rainfall prospects and rising temperatures heighten concerns over Hyderabad’s water security.
