Water scarcity and drought-like conditions across farms in and around Pune have driven vegetable prices up by 10–15%, as declining market arrivals tighten supplies. Onions are selling at ₹70 per kg and coriander at ₹40 per bunch, while green chillies, cluster beans and green capsicum have also become more expensive. Wholesalers report that drying borewells are forcing farmers to spend more on irrigation, increasing production costs, while fresh onion arrivals remain below expectations. Market participants expect prices to remain elevated, particularly during the festive season, adding pressure on household budgets and food businesses. The situation highlights how agricultural water shortages can disrupt supply chains, raise food prices and affect both consumers and small businesses.
