Telangana Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju has called for a 20% reduction in water consumption across Hyderabad’s three municipal corporation limits, which could save 80 million gallons per day (MGD) amid concerns over declining reservoir levels and the potential impact of El Niño. Hyderabad’s Core Urban Region currently has 560 MGD available from sources including the Krishna and Godavari rivers, Manjeera, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, with plans to secure an additional 60 MGD through supplementary supplies. These include 15 MGD from the Krishna, 5 MGD from Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, and further supplies through Mission Bhagiratha. Pipeline works to bring water from Mallannasagar, which holds 56 TMC, are expected to be completed by November, potentially adding another 20 MGD. Authorities have also been directed to curb water wastage, ensure sewage treatment plants operate efficiently, promote treated wastewater for non-domestic uses and identify alternative sources for districts facing supply pressures as groundwater levels decline.
