New Delhi: Concerns over groundwater quality in Delhi are increasingly influencing household water-treatment choices, with recent data indicating elevated salinity and fluoride levels across several parts of the national capital.
According to the Central Ground Water Board’s Annual Ground Water Quality Report 2024, 23.3% of groundwater samples collected in Delhi during the pre-monsoon period of 2023 exceeded the permissible electrical conductivity limit of 3,000 µS/cm. The report also found that 16.5% of 103 samples exceeded the permissible fluoride concentration of 1.5 mg/l. North, North West, Shahdara, South West and West Delhi were among the affected districts.
The reported variation in groundwater quality highlights the importance of assessing water characteristics at the household level rather than adopting a uniform purification approach. Technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO), ultraviolet (UV) and ultrafiltration (UF) may be suited to different water-quality conditions, particularly where total dissolved solids (TDS) vary significantly between locations.
Against this backdrop, water-purifier rental services are emerging as one option for households seeking flexibility, particularly tenants and frequent movers. Rentomojo currently lists 12 purifier models in Delhi across RO, UV, UF, alkaline and copper technologies, with rental plans beginning at ₹292 per month for a non-RO model and ₹391 per month for an RO model on longer-term plans.
The company says its technicians conduct TDS checks before and after installation, while maintenance and filter-change services are included with selected models. Such approaches point towards a broader shift from treating water purification simply as an appliance purchase to considering it as a service that can respond to changing water-quality conditions and household mobility.
For Delhi, however, household purification is only one layer of the wider water-quality challenge. Persistent groundwater salinity and fluoride exceedances underline the need for stronger source protection, groundwater monitoring, demand management and improved urban water governance alongside household-level treatment solutions.
